The Cook Family
Reuben Cook (1840-1933) was born in Collingbourne Ducis, Wiltshire, England. In 1867 he married Mary Jane Benyon (1848-1923) in Aberdare in Wales.
They had twelve children, seven of which died tragically before their parents:
1st child - Ambrose Cook - was born in 1869 in Wales. We are uncertain of his fate.
2nd child - John Cook - was born in 1870 in Cadley in Wiltshire and died in 1871.
The family migrated to New Zealand in about 1872.
3rd Child - Elizabeth Cook - was born in 1871 in Collingbourne Ducis, Wiltshire, England.
On 25 March 1888 she married Andrew Thomas McFarlane (born 1860 in Dunblane, Scotland).
He had a daughter by a previous marriage.
Their tragic deaths are recorded in the press cutting left.
4th Child - Fanny Cook - was born at Akatore Mill, Milton, New Zealand on 1 June 1874.
She was drowned in the accident reported left.
5th Child - Reuben Cook - was born in Catlins, Southland, New Zealand on 21 March 1878.
He was drowned in the accident reported left.
6th Child - Louis George Cook - was born on 4 April 1880 in Waimatuku.
Fought in the Boer War in South Africa.
On 10 April 1907 he married Jane Fowler in Riverton and they had two children.
Louis George died on 4 December 1951 in Invercargill.
7th Child - Thomas Cook - was born on 7 January 1882 in Invercargill and died 6 July 1882.
8th Child - Andrew Cook - was born on 7 January 1882 in Invercargill and died 29 December 1882.
9th Child - Mary Ellen Cook - was born on 14 October 1883 in Invercargill.
On 2 August 1905 she married Albert Smith in Riverton.
Mary Ellen died on 25 March 1925 in Invercargill.
10th Child - Albert Henry Cook - was born on 8 May 1886 in Invercargill.
He was injured in Gallipoli in 1915.
On 24 December 1919 he married Catherine Ada Swain and they had eight children.
Albert Henry died in a house fire in Tuatapere on 15 June 1973.
11th Child - Isabella Jane Cook - was born in 1888.
She married Arthur Enos Patterson in 1909 and they had five children.
She died in 1946.
12th Child - Richard Llewellyn Cook - was born on 9 June 1891.
He died of wounds in Etaples Military Hospital in France on 8 October 1917.
Also Rueben and Mary Jane adopted Ruby Bynon Cook, born 1904.
She married Roy Bertrand Matheson and they had two children.
She died in 1995.
